What must someone who cares for children know about them? What must he or she be able to do? Child studies class emphasizes stages of growth with the six and under age group. An important part of child studies in caring for children. A preschool program will developed and run by the high school students. By running a preschool program, first hand experience will help you become a better childcare worker, parent, teacher, or counselor.
Culminating activity: Participation in running a preschool

Want to increase your athletic performance, feel fit, and have fun? Practical, hands-on application of nutritious, low-cost foods following the U.S. Dietary Guidelines will be emphasized in this course. The computer will be used to analyze your diet. Skills and techniques to feed yourself nutritiously for less when you’re out on your own will be covered.
Culminating activity: Create healthy menus for seven days on a budget.

Fashion, Decorating and Design

Explore the science and art of fashion and clothing. Learn about the best clothes for you. Sew clothing, plan a wardrobe and use a computer embroidery sewing machine.

Housing and Environment

The course is designed to help you understand your own housing needs. Students will learn about homes of the past, present and future. Emphasis will be placed on how to read blueprints, making floor plans, developing decorative schemes, and designing and furnishing a room. Housing is one of the basic needs that must be met by all people. Everyone needs some kind of shelter. Because this is such a vast job-related area, special consideration will be spent on careers in housing.

Outdoor Living

Pre- requisites: None

During this semester course, the students cover topics related to outdoor safety and enjoyment. Topics include wilderness, First Aid, Hypothermia, Hypothermia, Food Safety, Fire Safety, Bears, Snakes, Rabies, Lyme Disease, West Nile Disease, gear selection and care, Planning and survival. Optional experiences may include cross country, skiing, snowshoes, rock climbing, and fishing.
