AIS Department Course Descriptions
General Description of AIS: 
This class is mandatory for any student who meets one or more of the following criteria listed under Target Audience. It provides additional assistance to students in a pull out type format. The class size is usually limited to less than ten students. Help may take the form of: assistance with the classroom material and/or homework, extra guided and independent practice, assistance in a targeted deficient learning standard, and preparation for a regents exam.
 
This class also provides an opportunity for students to develop the following character skills needed to succeed in this class: responsibility, initiative, optimism, perseverance, and ambition.  

Course No.  265
AIS Earth Science

Full Year/Semester:  Depends upon student progress and reason for being in AIS
Credit:  None
Target Audience:        
  • Students who fail the Earth Science regents. Either the Earth Science or Living Environment regents exam must be passed.
  • Students who fail Earth Science. Two regents science classes must be passed.
  • Students who are considered at risk of not passing the course and/or regents exam.
  • Students with a performance level of 1 or 2 on the 8th grade science assessment, or who are below the designated cut-off point.

Prerequisite:  None 
This class is designed to provide additional assistance to students in Earth Science. The AIS teacher communicates with the classroom teacher and then provides the students with additional practice and assistance with the material currently being taught. Assistance is also provided in the learning standard areas which students have been identified as deficient in. Homework assistance may also be provided, though this is not the focus of the class. Students may also hone organizational skills, practice academic content, and prepare for classroom exams and prepare for the Earth Science regents exam at the appropriate time.

Culminating Activity: Student will exit from the program when: teachers and the AIS Committee agree assistance is no longer needed, student passes the course and is no longer considered at risk, and/or student passes the Earth Science regents.

Course No. 266
AIS Living Environment (Biology)

Full Year/Semester:  Depends upon student progress and reason for being in AIS
Credit:  None
Target Audience:        
  • Students who fail the Biology regents. Either the Earth Science or Living Environment regents exam must be passed..
  • Students who fail Biology. Two regents science classes must be passed.
  • Students who are considered at risk of not passing the course and/or regents exam.
  • Students with a performance level of 1 or 2 on the 8th grade science assessment, or who are below the designated cut-off point.

Prerequisite:  None 
This class is designed to provide additional assistance to students in Biology. The AIS teacher communicates with the classroom teacher and then provides the students with additional practice and assistance with the material currently being taught. Students may also hone organizational skills, practice academic content, and prepare for classroom exams and prepare for the Biology regents exam at the appropriate time.

AIS Math

  • Students who fail the Math A regents.
  • Students who fail Math I/II, Math I part 1, Math I part 2, or Intermediate Geometry
  • Students who are considered at risk of not passing the course and/or regents exam.
  • Students with a performance level of 1 or 2 on the 8th grade math assessment, or who are below the designated cut-off point.

Prerequisite:  None
This class is designed to provide additional assistance to students in various math courses listed above. The AIS teacher communicates with the classroom teacher and then provides the students with additional practice and help with the material currently being taught. Assistance is also provided in the learning standard areas which students have been identified as deficient in. Homework assistance may also be provided, though this is not the focus of the class. Students may also hone organizational skills, practice academic content, and prepare for classroom exams and prepare for the Math A regents exam at the appropriate time.

AIS English

Full Year/Semester:  Depends upon student progress and reason for being in AIS

  • Students who fail the English regents.
  • Students who fail English 9, 10, or 11.
  • Students who are considered at risk of not passing the course and/or regents exam.
  • Students with a performance level of 1 or 2 on the 8th grade English assessment, or who are below the designated cut-off point.

This class is designed to provide additional assistance to students in English. The AIS teacher communicates with the classroom teacher and then provides the students with additional practice and assistance with the material currently being taught. Assistance is also provided in the learning standard areas which students have been identified as deficient in. Homework assistance may also be provided, though this is not the focus of the class. Students may also hone organizational skills, practice academic content, and prepare for classroom exams and prepare for the English regents exam at the appropriate time.

AIS Social Studies

Full Year/Semester:  Depends upon student progress and reason for being in AIS
Credit:  None
Target Audience:        
  • Students who fail the Global or U.S. History & Gov't regents. Both of these regents exams must be passed.
  • Students who fail Global 9, Global 10, or U.S. History & Gov't. All of these courses must be passed.
  • Students who are considered at risk of not passing the course and/or regents exam.
  • Students with a performance level of 1 or 2 on the 8th grade social studies assessment, or who are below the designated cut-off point.

Prerequisite:  None 
This class is designed to provide additional assistance to students in Global 9/10, or U.S. History & Gov't. The AIS teacher communicates with the classroom teacher and then provides the students with additional practice and help with the material currently being taught. Assistance is also provided in the learning standard areas which students have been identified as deficient in. Homework assistance may also be provided, though this is not the focus of the class. Students may also hone organizational skills, practice academic content, and prepare for classroom exams and for the Global/U.S. History & Gov't regents exam at the appropriate time.

AIS Literacy

This course is for students who have identified deficiencies with Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary.

Course No. 251
AIS Math Regents Prep.

This course will focus on preparing the students to take or re-take a Math Regents.
