The CEIP philosophy is to take a proactive career approach, balanced with relevant classroom academics, to provide authentic work experiences for PHS students. CEIP facilitates a smooth transition from school to college or a career. Students must be at least 14 years-old to participate with legal working permit. Times/days vary according to employer’s and student’s schedule.

Benefits to students include an academic program related to a variety of career goals, and the opportunity to gain experience and job skills. They learn to work with others, which builds confidence and self-esteem. In addition to gaining employable skills in a real workplace setting, students will have contacts, references for future employment applications, and a completed resume. Students in CEIP are very motivated to stay in school and to keep their grades up since they must meet all academic and graduation requirements to participate.
Students are made aware of all federal and state labor laws, knowledge that will help them throughout their careers. Job site placement is related to each student’s career interests, and their performance is evaluated by PHS job coaches, employers, the work experience coordinator, and self.

Classroom curriculum includes career and financial planning, as well as health/safety in the workplace. As part of the financial planning unit, the UFirst Federal Credit Union has opened accounts for students in the work experience class, including providing an initial $5 deposit. UFirst representatives visit the class monthly to explain the benefits of fiscal responsibility and to encourage savings, as well as, collect student deposits.

The job site curriculum includes a detailed training plan, student journal through word and blogging, time sheets in excel, familiarity with the employer’s policies and procedures and site visits from Karen Rock, the PHS Work Experience Coordinator.
Parents like their children participating in the CEIP program because it promotes cooperation with others, taking on responsibilities and develops a strong work ethic–all of which foster independence in students. Young adults who possess these skills have a higher standard of living and fewer social problems.

The entire Plattsburgh community benefits from the productive student citizens guided by this low-cost program. Local businesses will be able to hire better qualified new employees and have input into school curriculum. Employers also gain recognition for their community involvement.

Students and employers wishing to participate in this program are encouraged to contact Karen Rock, CEIP Work Experience Coordinator at 561-7500 ext. 5253
