K-5 Reading Program

K-5 Reading Program

The Plattsburgh City School District uses a reading series titled, Reading Wonders as the unified material that is used to deliver the Common Core State Standards to students in ELA. Wonders, a comprehensive K-5 program, is designed to meet the challenges of today’s classroom and reach all learners. A wealth of research-based print and digital resources provide support for building strong literacy foundations, accessing complex texts, engaging in collaborative conversations, and writing to sources. The series also includes four levels of leveled readers (Approaching Level, On Level, Beyond Level and English Learners) indexed by Lexile, Benchmark and Guided reading Levels.

The District elementary staff has also created the Plattsburgh City School District Literacy Survival Kit which identifies the golden threads of the PCSD literacy program. These threads are reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and assessment. This document serves as a crosswalk – merging balanced literacy instruction with the implementation of the Reading Wonders program.
